Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.

City officials said they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for information.

A high-ranking official commented the attack left him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
