Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
