RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
