The moment is ripe to change Manchester United's tactical setup - Ruben Amorim declares.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team players to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle.

Head coach Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's formation due to public scrutiny would have meant "the finish" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his customary three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and instead deploy an orthodox back four shielded by two central midfielders.

He himself conceded this effectively transformed into a back six in the final phase as his squad held on for a victory - securing just their second shutout of the campaign.

While he once notably stated that even the highest authority could force him to change his system, Amorim asserts the option to play with varied formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

Nevertheless, he emphasizes he could only make the switch when his team were doing sufficiently well - lest it would appear as if he was succumbing to external noise.

"At the time I came here last season, I understood perhaps I don't have the players to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the beginning of a journey," he commented.

"We were trying to establish an philosophy. Currently is a distinct time. We don't have a lot of players, and we need be flexible, so they see why we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the demands of you guys, or the faithful.

"When you criticize altering the formation repeatedly, I cannot make a change because the squad will understand I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is the end for the coach.

"When we are performing strongly in our system, that is the opportunity to evolve.

"This will help us grow into a better squad because when all the personnel are available, we are not planning to use a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

Having just two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is accurate to claim his side have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a severely stretched squad, with multiple first-team stars already confirmed absent for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be pushing his boss to let him to make a comeback after his hamstring problem.

"Bruno is already telling me he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No way. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Influence Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to continue offering input.

"He is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"There are bad things sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. After he recovers, he goes to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my job or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Injured Players

While the precise date for Fernandes' comeback - and that of fellow unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
